For the paint itself, do you just use regular acrylic paint or does it have to be fabric paint?

No it's ok! If there were typos I didn't really notice any. Well, I've been busy lately but I really want to make shoes like these when I have the time. If I ever make some that look good enough to post, I'll give credit to your tutorial :D

This is wonderful! I get commissioned for painted shoes a lot and have been trying to get faster lately. What you said about painting on large fibers is so true. Quick question, does putting a layer of the fabric modge podge on first make it significantly stiffer? I already use fabric painting medium to make the paint as flexible as possible, but it sounds like that a layer like that would help me speed up quite a bit. Not sure if I want to do it if it means sacrificing flexibility, though.

That said, wonderful tutorial! Very informative and clear with the instructions. Your shoes are beautiful. I hate to sound like one of those people desperate for attention, but I'd be honored if you took a look at my shoes and had any constructive criticism.

oh haha I just replied to your other comment telling you to look at this...XD lol so many typos in there...gosh i was tired when i made this thing!

ok so you use fabric paint? I assure you I've tried all paints in the book on mine and mine are actually MORE flexible I've found with acrylic....the fabric paint (many different kinds) I used to use would always peel and crack even through my sealers...acrylic is the only paint I've found that's flexible and long lasting. As for your pre-seal question. YES it does make the shoes sturdier, BUT it's not that first seal that makes things easy...it's the base painting of white. The pre-seal allows me to paint over large sections of the shoes/canvas with a base of white without catching in those large fibers, which then makes painting anything as easy as doing it on paper!

*also, I don't know if you've ever painted on "airwalks" brand shoes but OH MAH GOSH! They are like the best surface evvver O_O

I use acrylic paints, I just mix in fabric painting medium! Usually something like this: [link] That makes them a little less plastic-y and easier to work with, as well as making the paint itself more flexible when it dries. That way I still have the vibrancy and permanence of acrylics, but it's not super stiff when I'm done! It's awesome stuff, you should check it out. :>

I will DEFINITELY check out Airwalks! Right now I'm mainly working with Converse, and at the moment I'm even painting a pair of Nikes, but any suggestions for shoes easy to paint on are forever welcome.

:O I've been so curious about that stuff?! I've got to get some and try that! hmmmm so interesting! and yes! airwalks, I don't know why but they are so smoooth and easy to paint on..i didn't even pre-seal the pair i just did...it was nice! I've done a few converse but i alwys hate having to work around the huge logo lol. I tend to pick up cheap off brands from walmart and target so I can lower my prices a bit and charge mostly for my time spent rather than them having to shell out $45 on the shoes first. what kind of boots were the starry night pair painted on? that was seriously awesome! I've always wanted to try a pair of boots. The most non canvas I've done was a pair of nike-esc skate shoes and they were slick...i was terrified the paint wouldn't stick XD

The Starry Night boots were a brand I found called Jacobies, I think? They were just the cheapest I could find that fit the customer's request on short notice, so I don't know if I'd recommend them. Boots are tricky, cause most of them are leather or faux leather. I had to do a lot of research before I painted that pair to know the proper technique. The most informative tutorial I found said you have to strip the finish, usually with acetone, and then sandpaper the leather to give it more of a tooth to hold onto the paint. I just combined those steps and sandpapered the finish off, then sandpapered it to give it a tooth. It's definitely more work than painting on canvas. A LOT more. My arms were pretty sore for a while. I have a few other people asking for boots, but I'm DEFINITELY going to have to charge them more.

I'm working on a pair of Nikes right now! They're not slick, but they're so different from the material I normally work with. Sort of a suede-ish kind of material. It'll be interesting seeing how they look and hold up when they're done.

Yah let me know how that goes! Ive always wanted to try Nike s! And man do I have a hard time figuring out pricing...I base my price off of the shoe price + the time I spend barely..lol

Can we use sharpie for the line art?

you can...but in my experience, it tends to bleed out too much when i seal them...and after wearing some for awhile, the lines will fade :( but they do work as a last resort. I still highly recommend painting lines by hand.

everywhere...lol...USUALLY...walmart has a great assortment all year round but sometimes i go to my local street fair or farmers market too...i can get some pretty decent off brands there. Special requests that pay high amounts for name brands and things come from brand name stores in my local mall like Vans or Converse
